I forgot to answer the questions:

Are you running a regular WordPress site or multisite?

    regular

How often does this happen? Multiple times per day?

    Multiple times per day

Can you post a screenshot (or two) showing the 404 error and a normal visit for the same page? You can block out the site name and end of the IP address, if you want.

I did in the first post

Which other plugins do you have enabled?

Probably, WPML is the one causing the redirects. I also have W3 Total Cache, among others that are not worth mentioning.

If you know, is your host using Apache, or a different web server? (If you don’t mind linking to your site, I can check.)

Thank you for the additional details. I’ll collect info from the others who had similar 404 errors in their Live Traffic pages and see if there are any similarities. (This may take a few days.)

I took a look at your site too, and most of the time it was fast, but once, it took almost 10 seconds for the redirect to happen (then the rest was fast) — there might be intermittent problems at your host that are causing long delays only for a few visitors. I have seen extreme delays cause 404s for valid pages, so if you let the host know when these problems happen (the date/time from the 404’s in Wordfence’s Live Traffic), they may be able to see if the server was overloaded at those times.

Thanks for your reply, I will ask my host provider and report back tomorrow.

After some more testing and another user’s reply, it does seem to be certain types of redirects, even when not using WPML. If you haven’t contacted the host already, it might not be necessary. If you use “404” throttling in Wordfence’s options, you might want to increase the threshold for now — I’ll submit this to the dev team after some more testing, and will post back here when I know more. Thanks again for the details!

I am marking this as resolved, since the 404 issue is being tracked in our internal system now, and it will be fixed in a future version of Wordfence. Thanks for the details that helped track down the issue!
