• Is this a server-side javascript issue?

We have several wordpress instances on separate hostings on MediaTemple GridServer.

Last week the server went down affecting about 12 sites. The sites have various current & older WordPress installs, with several Themes.

    Since the downtime:
    1) the dropdown menus have stopped working on all PageLines Themes (Menus only display with top level items.
    2) the visual editor does not display
    3) Plugins like “Shortcode Ultimate” display incorrectly: Tabs content displays down the page
    4) Sliders/carousels display the individual slides in a vertical stack down the page

We are going crazy. MediaTemple says it isn’t their issue. And to check our logs.

This is way out of my skillset. And URGENT!

    Thanks,
    peter

  • Sounds like a jQuery issue to me. All of the things you mentioned depend on jQuery to some degree.
Without posting a live URL there isnt an easy way to debug the issue.
If you have chrome, open the developer tools, click console then refresh the page, might give you some clues.

One of the websites in question is:

https://moretolife.org.uk (I have made an emergency workaround, so there are no dropdowns.)

One other site is: https://moretolife.org.za (There are non-functioning dropdowns there, and in the backend, the visual editor on that site doesn’t work. The carousels have been reduced to one static image).

BTW: we tried deactivating all plugins, and still had all the same issues. So this seems to be a core issue.

    Thanks Simon.

    Best, Peter

All of your js files are 403 forbidden, i guess you installed some sort of security plugin?

I have just installed a security file on the moretolife.org.uk site.

I just had a suspicious Chrome notification that there was malware on the 1st site. (Eli’s AntiMalware)

Could you look at the 2nd site. That has a different setup.

    Peter

Both sites have exactly the same errors. All js files are denied with server 403 error.

Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 403 (Forbidden)

    OK…

then that is not the plugin from today.

How else could such an error/status occur. This seemed to happen after the Server downtime.

Could it be a permissions issue on the server?

Thats something you would have to ask your host.

THis tech note is what MediaTemple provides for this error:

    https://mediatemple.net/community/products/dv/204644980/why-am-i-seeing-a-403-forbidden-error-message

I don’t know where to start and what to change, and have about 15 websites with similar issues…

You should start with a ticket with your host if you have 15 sites all with the same errors all on the same host.

    Thanks Simon.

We have spoken to MT and they are profoundly unhelpful and turned the responsibility all around onto us…
