No thumbnails shown

  • When I upload images the thumbnail is not shown in the overview and not on the page.
    It is created, I see it in the uploads folder.

    I just installed WP and activated the theme Author. I also tried to change the theme to a default. No difference.
    I changed PHP on the server to 5.6stable. No change.

    What else can cause that?
