Unfortunately, after buying the full package and being quite pleased with BDP for several months, I have to give it a one-star because when we were ready to launch paid listings we discovered that BDP doesn’t support sales taxes, required in our jurisdiction. This is a very serious omission, meaning that we cannot legally sell paid listings. By law, when a customer who is based in Canada pays for a listing, we have to charge and list the provincial and federal sales taxes and provide the customer with a detailed receipt. Other plugins have this capability so I don’t see why BDP doesn’t. Looking back on the support forum, this issue has been raised for several years with no result. I will be happy to revert to a five-star rating once this has been fixed, but in the meanwhile it’s a deal-breaker and makes BDP useless for paid listings in any jurisdictions that require collection of sales taxes.

Update: I am raising this to 4 stars, because Dave Rodenbaugh was very responsive and helpful, even if the problem wasn’t completely solved. I was able to install an ecommerce plugin from elsewhere that handles the taxes, etc. A bit inconvenient but it works, and Dave assures that tax processing is coming.

    Hi ONG,

Thanks for taking the time to review BD here.

You are correct that BD doesn’t support sales tax, however, I wasn’t aware of any issues you raised regarding this particular omission. We haven’t revisited this issue in awhile mostly due to customer demand. We’re a small team and the features we work on are driven by what benefits the most users in the userbase. It would have been useful if you could have surfaced this in perhaps a support request or enhancement request instead of a rating.

You did say that you’ve been “quite pleased with BDP for several months” so the one-star rating seems a bit unfair for a plugin that is missing literally one feature for you. Perhaps you’d consider changing this to something more reflective of your true opinion here?

If you can contact us directly, I can find out more about what it would take to generate the sales tax aspect, but without knowing more specific requirements, it’s hard to guess what this would take. This issue may have been raised before, but again, if it’s not something a large number of folks are asking for, it doesn’t bubble to the top of our enhancement list like other things we are working on (like themes for the directory, category payment enhancements and so on)

You did mention “Other plugins have this capability so I don’t see why BDP doesn’t.”–what other directory plugins are doing this? Example may speed up this addition if I can look at how it’s implemented in other systems.

You are correct that since I have been quite pleased with BDP for several months one-star is too low, so I have raised it to two stars. But omitting sales taxes on purchases is more than just “one feature for you”. It makes us unable to recoup our costs for the plugin and development time spent on our end, since we cannot offer paid listings. If other folks are not asking for it, I’m willing to bet a lot of them are ignorant about the sales tax laws affecting them, setting them up for trouble down the road.

I did submit a support request here but the response was: BD currently supports only the price of the item–we don’t handle taxes, VAT, or other stuff like that. The “stuff like that” is serious stuff.

    Hi ONG1,

I understand completely. Serious to some for sure. Maybe it should be serious to more, but that’s up to the individual owner on whether they want or need to handle that.

I hear you loud and clear here. Again, if you could contact us directly to talk about the “other plugins” you see that offer this today and the specifics of your requirements, I’d be open to discussing this further. We did indicate that we don’t support it today, but are looking to add this in the future.

If we knew more about the specifics of your situation and what has to be supported, it would help greatly.
