No names for Mother, Father, Spouse

I’m trying the free version for the first time. I’ve created a small Family Group of 3 generations and 4 people. On the Member information page, under Mother, Father, and Spouse, the only option is a check mark. When displaying All Members, each Member’s Mother, Father, and Spouse is showing their own name. How do I get the names of the other members of that Family Group to show up as options to select?

Also, the Member information page switched to a single-column on the right margin and I cannot get it to change to 2-column. I don’t know what I did to cause the original change to the right margin – so how do I get the large square back for entering information instead of the small ones in 1 column?
