• I installed this originally to do one simple thing (as the name would suggest). Now it’s full of features I don’t need or want, notifications that are irrelevant, and nags to upgrade.

    Hi @leewillis77,

I’m sorry to hear you’re not happy with the changes! Please note that you can dismiss all notices with the “dismiss all notices” setting, so you don’t get any notifications if you don’t want to.

Activating shouldn’t be any more complicated either: you can just click “activate SSL”, and you’re basically done. If you don’t want to use any other features, you can ignore them.

The new options do not have to be enabled: they’re opt in. And if you don’t use them, the code won’t get loaded either. So it’s just as lightweight as it was.

As we have a lot of users, we feel it as our responsibility to educate our users about security, and provide them with some simple tools to improve it.

As for the upgrade nags: we are working with a team of 10 on this free plugin, free support included, and everybody has to pay the rent. I think we are pretty low key as far as nags are concerned, if you compare us to some other plugins.

If you have any specific suggestions, please let me know, and we can always look into that. In most cases we can help find a fitting solution, be it custom or for the general community.

I’d have expected that to be the default. Especially since the notifications I had were unrelated to the actual core feature that I installed the plugin for originally.

Unfortunately the notifications meant I couldn’t “ignore” them. I spent 20 minutes this morning trying to work out why there was a “1” next to the SSL menu item, without any success. I *think* it related to a plugin update, but honestly, I’m still not completely sure. The easiest option for me was just to remove the plugin.

That is, of course, your choice about your product. My feedback would be that it meant that the plugin became *less* useful, more intrusive and duplicated things that are already handled elsewhere, detracting from it’s “really simple” ethos.

I’m not sure that “We’re less annoying than some other people” is really the positive you were hoping it might be.

@leewillis77 ok. Let me rephrase that: In my opinion we have a good balance between a good free product, and showing the possibilities of the premium product. Without it, there wouldn’t be a free product. I think it’s a great deal for everybody.

I’m sorry to hear that the plugin has become less useful for you. As we make a product that needs to be useful for the majority of our users, this is not something we can do anything about for a single user, other than keeping it as simple as possible. If that is the case, is a matter of opinion I think.

    Thanks for your input.

Yeah it is bloatware now. Going to be removing it from our standard plugins. They are trying to be a security plugin instead of a really simple SSL plugin. Just use one of the many others Security plugins that have been around with a proven track record. As far as forcing HTTPS… it can be easily scripted, or manually added to your htaccess.
