• Since yesterday I am no longer able to logon to my WordPress account. The day before yesterday there was no problem.

Normally when I want to log in with my admin account or other account, I first get the Captcha check screen. After passing the check I can logon with any of my accounts.

But since yesterday no Captcha check and the logon screen says:
    Authentication required

https://sluk.nl requires a username and password.
Your connection to this site is not private.
    User Name:
    Password:

None of my credentials work with this screen. I guess it looks like the Captcha check screen, but no logon name is given and no math.

I already restored the most recent backup from before this issue.
Anyone any idea what to do to fix this?

  • I have the exact same problem. Maybe it has something to do with a plugin update but unfortunately I don’t exactly know which ones were updated recently and there seems to be no way to gain acces to my WP admin site.

    Hope someone knows a solution?!

When I use firefox I’m able to login again, so it seems to be depending om which browser you use.

But It’s not clear to me which plugin is for the Captcha check. IE also works by the way.

it seems you are using .htaccess user authentication.. or plugin?

Great, IE works indeed! Thanks for sharing that!
So, might as well be a Chrome problem (assuming that is where you also experienced this problem)?

I mainly use Chrome, so it looks like it.
    I also found this link:

But for some strange reason I can’t find si-captcha-for-wordpress or any other Captcha in any folder.

I am able to login with chrome, but I need another browser to see the captcha userid en math.

Anybody any idea why the Captcha check doesn’t show a username and math in Chrome, but does in IE, Firefox and Edge?

Please check https://sluk.nl/wp-admin with different browsers.

I’m running WordPress 4.4.2 running Dinky theme.
I’m not sure if that matters, because I don’t know of the theme has anything to do with the admin console.

I would just like to logon with chrome.
The funny thing is dat when you use the captcha credentials that you get in one of the other browsers, you can get passed the check in Chrome.

I have the same issue when I use Chrome. IE works perfectly fine when the prompt for the admin console is shown. Chrome used to work and then one day it no longer showed the necessary information in the authentication prompt.

Who is providing your hosting? Maybe it is something on the Host end.

I no longer have a problem with this issue. The problem disappeared just as unexpected as it appeared.
