Got an email from my site saying

In this case, WordPress caught an error with one of your plugins, Two Factor Authentication.

the website wasn’t functioning at all nor could I login.

I was able to use the recovery mode to get into the website and deactivate the Two Factor Authentication Plugin. The site is up and running now. This was the error that generated the email to me (note “websitename” in the below snippet is a substitute to the actual name of the website.

An error of type E_ERROR was caused in line 52 of the file /home2/websitename/public_html/websitename.com/wp-content/plugins/two-factor-authentication/providers/totp-hotp/loader.php. • I have encountered the same issue – this update on my personal blog site has caused WordPress to fatal error. PHP is 7.4.

I have this plugin installed on about a quite large number of sites, but definitely not pushing updates to the plugin to any more!

Can you tell me what other plugins you have installed, please?

Ya figured it was the automatic update of the plugin that caused this issue. I have Wordfence free on another website and it has a 2FA module that seems to be functioning fine.

    Hi,

I have found the issue. This fatal error occurs on sites on with AUTH_KEY is not defined in wp-config.php. I have fixed that now – if you upgrade to version 1.12.2, then all should be well.

    Thank you,
    David?????

OP said this is resolved – it isn’t.

His resolution was to use another plugin. That’s hardly resolving the matter.

This is a list of plugins installed on the site that went down:

    Advanced Custom Fields
Advanced Editor Tools (previously TinyMCE Advanced)
    Akismet Anti-Spam

Our posts crossed there, because mine went into a moderation queue. If you update to 1.12.2 you should find the problem fixed. Sorry for the trouble!

@greghl I did not say it was resolved on this site I had the issue with only that I was using another 2FA option on ANOTHER website without any issue.
