I moved a website to a new server (new hosting service). Since I moved it, the Wordfence Alert emails have been difficult to read because there are no longer any line breaks in the body of the emails.

My email client (Outlook 2016) is showing that the messages are in HTML format. I also checked in the iOS email client to make sure it wasn’t an Outlook problem and I see the same formatting issue there.

I searched my WordFence settings and couldn’t find any options related to email format (text or html) or anything else related to how email alerts are formatted.

Here is some info about the websites’ current configuration:

    • Running on Digital Ocean server through Cloudways
    • MailGun for SMTP
    • WP Mail SMTP to connect to MailGun
    • Cloudways CDN

Prior to this new server when the alert emails were formatted correctly, the site was running on a HostGator server and using HostGator for SMTP.

What can I change so that the alert emails are once again formatted properly?

  • Hi winmkt!

Thanks for reaching out. Wordfence uses the WordPress built in mail function. Does the same thing happen with other emails from WordPress such as user registration and password reset requests? If so, there could be some issue with the content type being forced to HTML for all your emails.

    Let me know. Thanks!

    Hi @wfasa,

Yes, the content type is being set to HTML. I checked WP Mail SMTP and don’t see an option there to choose Text or HTML so I’m not sure what is forcing this. Can you suggest anything else I can do to track down the cause of this?

    Hi @wfasa,

Your message got me thinking so I did some searching and found out that WP Mail SMTP is likely the cause of my problem. They have this listed as an issue and say their next version to be released in early April 2018 should fix it (see https://github.com/awesomemotive/wp-mail-smtp/issues/101).

I think I can mark this as resolved since it appears it is not a WordFence issue.

    Thank you for your time.

    Eric
