No image change unless size option is selected

On products with both color and size variations, if no size is chosen the front end the swatches don’t change the product image. In other words, if customer lands on the page and the size dropdown menu is set to something like “choose a size” then the swatches aren’t active.

Is there a solution to this?

I can see there is already a resolved topic on this but no solution there!
