    Hey there.

I’m updating a WP blog from 3.1.2 to the newest version 3.4. Auto update isn’t possible because it’s hosted on a University filespace and they don’t allow for that.

I remember when I set up my WP blog that the .htaccess file was crucial, and reading up on it here brought up many problems.

My problem: the site doesn’t have a .htaccess file. I checked in 3 different ftp browsers, enabling hidden files. I see a lot, but not .htaccess file. The blog runs perfectly fine.

So, errr … is that going to cause issues? The website is a big one and I wouldn’t want to mess it up ??

  • Have you turned on custom permalinks? ARe you on an apache server?

If not, you would not have an .htaccess

    I didn’t know that.

Permalinks is on “default”, and I guess it’s not an apache server then.

Thank you for the insanely quick answer – may HE bestow upon a copious amount of ramen and meatballs ??

    It may be apache…

But if your permalinks are set to default, you don’t have an .htaccess

WP generates the file when you switch permalinks away from default
