Having a big problem with NextGEN galleries on my site https://hill107.net/

An example page where a gallery should be displayed (as basic thumbnail view) is

    https://www.hill107.net/battle-of-arnhem/john-hackett/john-hackett-gallery/

but there are several other gallery pages too – NONE work now, they all used to, certainly a matter of a couple of months ago. I haven’t made any major site changes since then, just carried on installing updates from the Dashboard.

The galleries are inserted using shortcodes – in the example above the code used is

    [ngg_images gallery_ids="9" display_type="photocrati-nextgen_basic_thumbnails"]

Instead, I have tried inserting the gallery via the page editor, but am not able to. I see the NextGEN button in the editor, but as soon as the interface launches I’m not able to choose any options or galleries. The ‘Select a display type’ area is completely blank and most drop down menus have no options present.

On the plus side, the galleries and images are definitely still there – if I go into Manage Galleries I can see them there and I can browse the gallery contents via ftp in wp-content/gallery.

The issue doesn’t appear to be theme related – I have switched to other themes, including basic www.remarpro.com ones and still get no galleries.

Any idea what is going wrong or how I can fix it?

@ianam – Have you tried using a different Permalinks structure other than the “Default” such as “Post name” or “Month name”?

My permalinks are set to the ‘Post name’ option

@ianam – I see you are using a “minify” option in your cache, this can often cause issues for NextGEN Gallery … please try turning off that option and clearing all caches to see if that sorts out this problem.

    Thanks!

    Hi again

Yes, that was one of the first things I thought of and had tried before – I’ve now again emptied caches, turned off caching and deactivated my caching plugin (W3 Total Cache).

    Still no galleries showing.

Plus, I’ve had caching running for a long time and galleries used to work perfectly with it.

Thanks for your quick suggestions though!

I find one of the strangest thing to be the behaviour of the NextGEN interface in the post editor – I can’t do anything with the interface (image linked) as there are no options to choose in the Display Galleries tab. Something’s amiss ??

@ianam – W3 Total Cache leaves a great many cache artifacts behind when it is deactivated … did you remove all of that as well?

Also, if this was not happening before, what changed before this issue appeared?

Well, I’ve deleted the W3 Cache plugin now, along with all the files WP idenified as associated with it – still no galleries.

As I said, I’ve made no changes to the site recently, just updated existing plugins and upgraded WordPress through the higher 3.x versions and now to version 4. Problem is I don’t know exactly when the galleries stopped being visible – I haven’t looked at the site closely or added more material during the past few months. Looked this week because I was thinking about changing the layout (but haven’t as yet!).

I appreciate that this doesn’t make it easy to identify the issue, just looking for some ideas!

@ianam – When you removed W3 Total Cache, did you verify via FTP to ensure all of the files and folders it creates were also removed. Using the delete process from your WordPress Dashboard does not do this.

Hopefully it will help but if nothing else, it ensure there is no cache issue from that plugin.

Please remember to make a back-up just in case.

I have now deleted all W3 Total Cache folders from wp-content as well as the Dashboard delete process.

    Sorry, still no change…

@ianam – Have you tried to insert your displays via the IGW (“green button”)?

Yes, I have – see one of my posts above. The interface is not behaving

Apologies but original image link is not working – screenshot is now here.

From the Dashboard – Gallery – Gallery Settings I also get no drop down list of options in the ‘Display Galleries as’ chooser. But in Manage Galleries and Manage Albums I do see all my images in the correct galleries and albums.

@ianam – Have you tried re-installing via FTP and manually over-writing the existing files and folders under /plugins/nextgen-gallery/?

Then using the Reset Option under Gallery > Other Options?

    – Cais.

    (@ianam)

That appears to have done the trick – galleries now displaying and I’m getting all the options showing in the Gallery menus.

Many, many thanks for persevering with my problem.

I have the exact same problem, and I’ve followed all of the above instructions, including the last one that was the solution of ianam.

    However, I have not succeeded.

Same thing – no changes were made on the server, except regular updates (site is https://www.svea.nu)

I updated all plugins today in hopes of resolution, but that turned the plugin to look for images in the root, instead of wp-content/gallery/ even though the settings says just that. I copied the images for the front page gallery to the root, to keep it running.

Trying to manage galleries, the plugin recognizes their existance, but does not show them.

What further steps can I take to get this to work?

It would be best for you to start your own topic to address your specific site.

@ianam – Thanks for the follow-up. You are very welcome … and thanks for your patience in getting this sorted out, too!

    – Cais.

Thanks, but I wished you’d answer that thread then, as you did with this one…
