After installing SMTP plugins for WordPress, WordFence no longer sends out emails.

The same results occurred using two plugins:
    WP Mail SMTP
    Mailgun for WordPress

I am unable to find a configuration setting for either WordFence or the two plugins that would allow peaceful coexistence.

    Please advice

    Thanks in advance!

  • Hey @raywporg,

I haven’t seen any conflicts with SMTP plugins, and usually, recommend them when a site is having trouble with wp_mail. Have you checked your spam?

You can test this by navigating to Tools > Diagnostics > Other Test, which is at the very bottom of the page. You’ll notice two options to send test emails.
Send a test email from this WordPress server to an email address
Send a test activity report email

Please give this a try and let me know how it goes.

    Thanks,

So as strange as this will sound, I may NO configuration changes.

I simply went to Tools > Diagnostics and sent both a test email and a test activity report. BOTH came through just fine.

Unfortunately, no additional Wordfence Alert emails are sent when there is blocking or brute attempts made. (Again, these were being delivered before I installed the mailgun for WP plugin)

    Thoughts?

    Update:

So after several days of using the mailgun plugin, I’m getting all expected emails from all other plugins and the WP core functionality.

The ONLY wordfence report that has been successfully emailed, is a single alert about a plugin being out-of-date.

After reviewing the logs for all other security alerts that have been occurring, I have not received any email alerts for any of them. (and I used to get them just fine before installing the mailgun plugin)

I have reached out to mailgun as well, but when all other emails are working just fine with all other plugins and WP, and the fact that wordfence did send at least one email, it’s difficult to diagnose the cause.

Again, I’m not trying to point fingers or make you fix someone else’s plugin, I’m just trying to provide information so that I can determine a solution, or a gap in my understanding of how to properly configure wordfence.

Without the email alerts to keep me aware, the whole purpose of wordfence is greatly diminished.

Once again your assistance is greatly appreciated.

I wonder if this has to do with the content type. There might be a problem with the other plugin not sending them because of html, etc. Depending on who you are using to send the emails (I’m not familiar with mailgun and if it uses another service like gmail to send or sends them using its own service) you may need to have them see if there is a spam block or something that is causing this.

    Success Finally!

Okay so I can only tell you what steps I took and I can only “assume” that these steps are what correct my problem.

    Deactivate WordFence
    Deactive Mailgun

    Active Mailgun
    Active WordFence

That order (after other attempts with other orders) has all my sites now working.

Thanks for everyone support and help!
    Ray
