Lately I have been unable to get any email properly from iThemes Security. When the plugin sends email out to my email address configured in the plugin and the same email address used in WordPress iteself, the email bounces back to that same email address with the error:

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

    [email protected]
    host mailchannels-lb-2-364402916.us-west-2.elb.amazonaws.com [54.244.124.122]
SMTP error from remote mail server after end of data:
550 5.7.1 [BFD] Sender prohibited by SPF

This is even after the webhost has added a SPF record for mailchannels. I have no issues receiving email from another security plugin I use its only iThemes Security.

  • The problem is that you are trying to send from a yahoo.com address. Yahoo does not designate MailChannels as an authorized sender, hence the rejection. If MailChannels accepted your mail, receivers would reject it anyhow.

There is no configuration for outgoing email for this plugin. I tried sending the backups to a gmail address rather than to a yahoo.com address and the same bounce back message occurred.

There is a SPF record configured for yahoo.com as an accepted sender. Why is it that only iThemes Security is the only plugin on two sites that are having an issue sending email to yahoo.com or gmail.com addresses and why is it only recently? Other plugins have no issue reaching either my yahoo.com or gmail.com email addresses.

I even resorted to installing “WP Mail SMTP” and using that to send all out going email on the website via an email account on my web hosting system. I tried using both yahoo.com and gmail accounts as destination email address for backups from iThemes Security.

iThemes Security still had bounce back issues with the test backups.

The iTSec plugin uses the WordPress admin_email address as “From:” address.
Try and change the admin_email address under the WordPress Settings->General menu option.

Thanks dwinden that helped fixed the problem.

Got the same problem with a gmail email, I think it started either after the last WordPress update or last iThemes update.

Why should the email need changing if it worked great before?

Besides if it has problems with gmail and yahoo,
that means one has to open a new account with yet a different/new email provider and switch all WordPress related things to it.
