‘No display’ images bug

That’s a good question. In reality the AMP layout setting really should be rarely used. We added it to expose some AMP capabilities to the editor, but in the years since I don’t recall it ever be being used. Thus it is not useful. It also has the issue of not applying to the non-AMP version of the page.

So I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong. It’s just the plugin is confusing here, which we need to fix.

thanks for the explanation @westonruter – though not really the answer I was hoping for as this was requested by one of our authors, but I’ll find another way of not displaying certain blocks on the AMP version and have it visible on nonAMP.
