No comments or titles showing on blog posts

I am using the Twenty Seventeen theme, edited with Gutenberg. I have a static Home page, and Posts go to a specified page with no other code on it except for the posts that I enter. When I add a post, it appears on the blog post page, but without the title I gave it, and it does not show a Reply box. When I first add the post and view it in the editor, I can see the Reply box, but when I visit the page from outside the Admin site (or even within the Admin site after I have first added the post) I do not see either titles or Reply boxes.

I have all the correct boxes checked for allowing comments and discussion. In my Posts admin section I can see all the posts I have added as tests, and I can see that I have replied to one of them whilst I was using the Admin editor. But then it all just disappears.

I have deactivated all plugins, which made no difference. I have changed the Theme to Twenty Sixteen which made no difference. I can see loads of other people with the same problem in the forums, but no-one has an answer that has worked for me.
