No comments on Protected Pages

Since changing to a new theme my protected posts won’t allow comments. That’s not strictly right. I’m guessing it is meant to work but even after you are on the post page and logged in you get the message “This post is password protected. Enter the password to view comments.” It appears the comments don’t pick up on the fact you are logged in and there is no box to re-log in. I hope it’s just a line of code or something.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
