• Hello.

I’m importing my blog from wordpress.com to a wordpress install on a server but comments and draft posts don’t import. Is there a step I’m missing?

  • Do note that the author has been working on the plugin. You may be using an older version of it.

You may want to open the XML file and see if the draft posts and comments are in there just to be sure.

Question: Isn’t this for a wordpress install and not for a wordpress.com hosted blog?

I’m importing FROM a wordpress.com hosted blog to a new wordpress blog hosted on a new server.

That is exactly what the plugin is made for.

ok, maybe I’m just being dumb. When I install the plugin on my new wordpress install, it wants to EXPORT from the new blog (that has no entries yet) instead of IMPORTING from my old wordpress hosted blog.

Re-visit the link for the plugin and pay very careful attention to the install instructions. If you properly install it, you’ll have the WXR Import option as well.

…and in the directions, it says, “his will allow you to download an export of your WordPress posts and comments in an XML format usable in WordPress.com”

This is the reverse of what I need. I’m going FROM a wordpress hosted blog TO a new fresh install in a new server. I need the files from the wordpress hosted blog imported into the new fresh install. Using the wordpress.com feature, comments don’t import.

There’s both an importer and an exporter within that zip file. Please read (Oh, I forget the author’s name)’s post to see which file you need to use and where to place it.

    From the author’s site:
The exporter pumps a WordPress blog (including comments) out to a WXR file (WordPress eXtended RSS). It will allow you to import blog entries and comments into an existing WordPress blog. It does not overwrite existing entries and it respects authors by giving you the ability to choose who the imported entries are attributed to.

It’s straightforward if you read the instructions.
Many many folks have used this and it’s a rave.

And very much loved over in wp.com land. ??

I guess where I’m missing the point is the wordpress install I have already has an importer. So the conclusion I have at this point is the new plugin reconfigures the existing importer to pull in the comments and draft posts as well. But in running it, the comments still do not import into the new blog.

    So am I missing something?

OK, the comments imported, but they were placed in the wrong posts. In other words, comments from recent posts were placed in posts that are months old.

    Any clues? Thanks.
