• Hello,

I want to disable user registration on a WordPress site, and the checkbox for “Anyone can register” is not in Settings > General

Any ideas why this would be gone? We are currently dealing with a hack breach.

  • Probably has something to do with the hack itself or the after-effects of the hack.

Could be… any idea how I get it back?

As you cleanup the hack and replace infected files I’d expect it to comeback.

I have no idea where that is in the database ‘options’ tables but if you know how to modify a database table and can find it that might be a place to set it regardless of the missing entry in the dashboard.

If it’s a multisite you could go into the site settings and change the toggle there.

Else you could reinstall WordPress over the present WordPress core files and possibly fix it there.

You mentioned you are ‘currently dealing with a hack breach’ but if you don’t already have a guide to that right now I’ll include this one to help you…

Carefully follow this guide. When you’re done, you may want to implement some (if not all) of the recommended security measures and start backing up your site.
