I’m using a clean install of WordPress 6. Both in the standard posts and in custom posts type categories DO show up in the left hand menu, and I can assign categories to posts using the quick edit function. However, when editing a post the “categories” dropdown is missing in the right-hand sidebar. Is this a new feature in WordPress 6 I’m unaware of, or is something wrong here?

Also: the same thing goes for tags, and any custom taxonomy I add through functions.php.

It gets weirder: there’s options missing.

And, preferences was not found in the bottom of the right sidebar (also missing?), but rather in the dropdown ‘cog’ menu up top.

    Hi,

Would it be the same phenomenon in another browser?
For the Chrome browser, try turning off browser extensions or clearing the browser’s cache.

That’s really, really weird. Can you give me a link to the post you’re looking at on your site?

Yes, same thing in chrome and safari (I use Firefox).

OK, your theme is 2022. Just because 2022 is a new style block theme, can you switch to 2021 and see if it makes a diff? Meantime, I’m asking folks in the back room to throw some insights our way.

Same result, unfortunately! Thank you by the way, for diving into this with me.

In “Site Health” the following is reported:

The REST API did not behave correctly.

The REST API is one way WordPress, and other applications, communicate with the server. One example is the block editor screen, which relies on this to display, and save, your posts and pages.

The REST API did not process the context query parameter correctly.

I did a quick google and turns out people think this is to be ignored, but could this be of note for my situation by any chance?

Any more ideas on your end? I’m working on a website for a client and this issue is currently seriously halting my progress…

I did some digging and turns out that NGINX (the web server that I use as it is faster than Apache) does not like any other permalink structure other than “plain”. Switching the permalink structure to plain brought back the categories! Marking the thread as solved.

That being said, there’s something to be said compatibility-wise; nginx is a web server gaining popularity rapidly and if this is an issue on either side it would be good to look into that. I can provide any troubleshooting info if need be!

Anyhow, thank you for your help!

It can, but I’m no nginx expert.

I have the same issue in WP6, currently with colormag theme that works fine elsewhere, I have tried the permalink tip as indicated, still no sign of categories, and likewise they don’t appear in the preferences list.

I have had the same problem for a long time on two sites.
I have the studiopress base theme.

I recently solved it by disabling the browser adblocker and reloading the page.

I just edited an article but this system no longer works.

I also solved with the classic editor plugin. Activating it, the tags and categories reappear. Unfortunately, this plugin has ruined an article that I can no longer modify and I do not want to use this system that I do not recommend at all.

At the moment I am frustrated and I don’t know how to fix it.

This problem has been going on for me for many months.

I once fixed it by deactivating and reactivating all plugins but I can’t do it every time it happens.

I’ve also been plagued by this problem. My workaround has been to save the post as a draft. Go into Posts->All then select Quick Edit. The categories appear there. Select one, save it, then publish it.

But it seems to be removed from the side bar. I also use a plugin that sends notices based on the category called “Email Subscribers” which could be impacting this functionality. Unsure.
