  • Is it possible that you’re “test-sharing” these links before you have added your images and excerpt? Facebook caches links the first time they’re shared. So if you open the sharing dialog for the link before you have added images and content, the link is cached that way.

To renew what’s in the Facebook cache, run the link through the Facebook Object Debugger (copy-paste the link and then click “Fetch new scrape information”). I just did so with the link you provided and now I see an image and excerpt when I open the page’s share dialog box.

I also checked your source code and it looks like Jetpack properly generated the open graph tags for the page. So caching seems like the only thing that could have caused this issue. Anytime you see this problem, try the Facebook Object Debugger first.

Thanks for the hint with the Facebook Object Debugger.

What do you mean by “test-sharing”?
I previewed the article in wordpress using the preview button.
I also experienced this behavior once or twice when creating an article via the iOS App on the iPad and published it.

By “test-sharing,” I mean did you open the Facebook sharing dialog box when you were previewing the page? If you opened that dialog at any point before the page/post was complete, it was cached by Facebook at that point. If the post had no image attached at the time, then it was cached with no image. Use the debugger to clear the old version from the Facebook cache.

Nope. I never do a test-sharing in that sense.
Best thing I do is use the preview. Sometimes I draft articles, save them, edit them after a period of time, save them again and publish them at a later stage.
Or I use the timer to automatically publish at a certain date.
But I never press the sharing button actively.

I’m not sure what else could cause the issue except some sort of caching, whether by Facebook or some other program. As I stated, your source code looks fine; Jetpack is generating the proper tags. So the Facebook Debugger appears to be your solution for now.

That might be a workaround. But it can’t be the solution.
I’m using the automatic publicize function when publishing. So I have to double check each time if the publicized article is shown correctly in Facebook and manually publish it again after using the Facebook Debugger.
    That’s more than inconvenient. ??

By “automatic publicize function,” do you just mean you leave the Publicize box checked when you create and publish a new post, or something else?

If it’s not a caching issue, then maybe Jetpack isn’t generating the Open Graph tags quickly enough upon publishing.

I have allowed Publicize to share posts upon publishing and haven’t had any issues. However, my Open Graph tags are generated by another plugin (All in One SEO) instead of Jetpack.

Yes, that’s what I do: Publish with the box checked.
I tried to disable that and use Open Graph by Yoast SEO. But had the same effects.

Well, I wish I could be of more help, but I’m pretty much out of ideas other than the all-to-frequent culprit/fallback, “plugin conflict.” Hopefully the Jetpack crew can figure this out when they return on April 11.

The only other thing I can think to suggest is that you save your post as a draft at least once after adding content/images but before actually publishing (maybe you’re already doing that, though).

    Well, thanks so far.
I also hope they figure this out as it is only a sporadic thing.
And yes, more often than not I save the draft before publishing.

@jjbte was right to point you towards Facebook’s Debug tool. That’s often the best way to understand what Facebook sees, and what errors it gets when trying to access one of your posts to generate a post preview.

I looked at Facebook’s results for your most recent post, and everything appears to be working properly:
    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object?q=http%3A%2F%2Falexsebastian.de%2F2016%2F04%2Fdem-kunstkopf-ins-gewissen-geredet%2F

    Do you still experience issues?

If so, could you try to publish a new post, and look at it in Facebook Debug immediately after publishing it?

Let me know what you find.

To add to Jeremy’s instructions for checking the Debug info right after publishing… make sure to press the Show existing scrape information button. That will show you what Facebook cached at the moment you published your post.
