A close friend of mine had someone set up a WP site for his band, and now he would like to take care of it himself because the person who set it up for him doesn’t have the time anymore. My friend logged into his account via https://www.site.com/wp-admin and asked me how to change a few things since I have admin privilege on a nonprofit site that I help manage.

I was very surprised to see that the tabs on the left do not include the ones I’m familiar with, such as “users” and “plugins.” Even the “settings” tab has only one option, and it’s worthless (“sharing”).

My friend and I both assumed he had admin privilege, and that seemed logical to me since he used the wp-admin login. But it sure looks to me as though he has only author privilege. Is it possible to log in via wp-admin without admin privilege?

The site is hosted at DreamHost, uses 4.5.3, and is currently set up as a blog(which is one thing he wants to change – making it a static page site instead, since it isn’t really a blog). Not sure what theme.

    Thanks for any help!

  • Craig,

The user profiles are stored in the MySQL database on the server. Since your friend is probably not comfortable making changes to the database via the My PHPAdmin tool in the cpanel I would suggest he call in to Dreamhost and ask tech support to change his permissions to admin so all the options come up in the dashboard.

Either that or he can get his friend who set it up to go in and increase his access level.

    Good luck,
    Brett

    Hello,
In order that all options appear he should have “Administrator” privileges.

Thanks for the speedy replies, Brett and Walter. It appears certain, then, that my friend doesn’t have admin privilege even though he was able to log in via wp-admin.

I’m pretty new to WP, and I thought “normal” users logged in using wp-login and “admin” users came in via wp-admin. It must not actually matter, though.

I can do this for him, so I’ll have him log into his DreamHost account and take care of it. Thanks again.

    Marking topic “resolved.”
