• Was upgrading to WP 4.7 and a “HTTP 500” error popped up.

The front-end of the site is working, but the backend keeps forwarding to the URL “/wp-admin/upgrade.php?_wp_http_referer=%2Fwp-admin%2F” which displays the 500 error – no matter what part of the backend I try to go to (add new post, widgets etc.) I always get forwarded to that URL. I can’t access the dashboard or any part of the backend at all. (I’ve tried clearing browser cache.)

Most ‘solutions’ say I have to update or disable my plugins, but I cannot access the plugin page to do that. I couldn’t find any info on this specific problem, either.

    Any ideas?

  • Do you use the W3 cache plugin ?

that broke the upgrade for me

    if you have that plugin
Try to login to and disable the plugins using FTP
renaming the wp-content\plugins folder to plugins-old
also directly in the folder rename
    advanced-cache.php
    db.php
    object-cache.php
    w3-total-cache-config.php

try to login again, that gave me a upgrade database page and after that the login worked and I renamed everything back again.

I did use the W3 plugin yes, I was thinking that may have been the answer just wanted to confirm before I did it. I just renamed the plugins folder and yes, I was able to complete the upgrade.
    Thanks.
