    And how about SEO… can posts, pages and CPT’s still be read by search engines?

    You’ll need to use a different mechanism to move 404 users to the login page. That’s not how WordPress works by default. There are a ton of 404-customization plugins out there, and I’m sure one will send users back to the home page or the login page.

    Second, there’s a bunch of posts on that here, but the prevailing wisdom is no, once the site is private, it’s private.

    Alright then,
    I just wanted to be clear on that… though I see logged in users still get the 404 page and that’s fine with me.

    That makes sense. Even if you’re the admin and you go to a nonexistent URL, you’ll get some sort of response. I use a 404 page on some of my sites that also contain links to where I think (based on the missed URL) I think they want to go.
