I’m new to word press and have just found out about child themes. So I’m trying to set it up.

so I downloaded the nisarg-child files from the author’s website and put them into the wp-content\themes\nisarg-child directory.

When I log into the wordpress site as admin and go to the themes menu, I see wording at the lower part of the page that says:

    Broken Themes
The following themes are installed but incomplete.

    Name: Nisarg Child
Description: The parent theme is missing. please install the “Nisarg” parent theme.

I can either delete it or “install parent theme”.

I tried to install the parent theme and it failed, because that theme is already installed.

Not sure how to fix this.

  • In your child theme’s stylesheet, the Template: line must contain the name of the folder that contains your parent theme, and capitalization matters. Based on the error message, you probably have:

    Template: Nisarg

    but it should probably be

    Template: nisarg

    instead.

you were right! Now I see both nisarg themes listed. Should I switch over to the Child one and activate it? doing all future work from that theme?

Yes. The benefit of using a child theme is that you can make changes to your theme and they won’t be lost if the theme is updated in the future.
