I changed my WP username by creating a new administrator account and deleting my old one. So far so good.

What happened is that my nickname on all my own replies to comments on my posts mysteriously changed to an unlinked “Facebook User”:

(scroll down to the Comments section and you see replies posted by Facebook User)

I’d like to change “Facebook User” back to my linked nickname with my avatar, as I had it before. How do I do that?

  • What happens when you select ‘edit’ on the comment then update the user name? Does that fix the issue? I realize it might be a bit time consuming to edit them individually but don’t think you can do a quick edit on comment name changes.

That’s the funny part: Under ‘Edit Comment’ my nickname, my e-mail address, and my link-URL are listed just as I want them. It just says “Facebook User” in the Comment section.

It has to do with the Facebook Connect plugin. Everytime I deactivate the plugin, “Facebook User” disappears and my desired nickname appears in its place. As soon as I activate the plugin again, all my replies to comments go back to “Facebook User.”

There are some posts on Adam Breckler’s site about privacy settings causing the ‘facebook user’ issue.

Starting at about comment 23 or so.

Other than that, what happens if you re add the old admin account and use it as your public name (with the new userid) or go the other way and use the old admin as your user but the new id as your public name?

The Public name setting is under ‘Users; Options; Display name publicly as’

I deleted the old admin account, so I can’t re-add it.

Whatever I set the Public name to makes no difference. The only thing that fixes the issue is to deactivate the FB-connect plugin. Once reactivated, I’m an unlinked “Facebook User” again. Drives me crazy.

Looks like I may have to go with a different plugin, because this issue seems oddly irreversible.

    Alright. I fixed it.

Even after uninstalling and reinstalling the plugin, the problem persisted. So I simply deleted and reposted every single comment that was affected, plus every single reply to every comment affected, meticulously adjusting all original times and dates, as well as names and email addresses of my commenters. Took me hours to manually restore everything. At least now my comment section looks just like before the glitch, and all my replies are properly attributed to their rightful author, not some anonymous Facebook User.

No clue what exactly had caused the problem. What I learned is that changing one’s username can lead to annoying unintended consequences with plugins.
