Looked for something like this but I cannot use it to simply to verify users as it requires woocommerce.
Is there a way around this please?

If you really need this, install woocommerce and find a plugin to disable most features of woocommerce.
You don’t need to have products or a store, just to create the pages for the user account to register. After that you can use other plugin to redirect the user to other page after successful login so that the user never even sees the woocommerce my account page.
