next/previous links on single don’t exclude cats, patches not working

I’ve searched the forums and found a thread about this and through that found a patch on the WP Trac. I downloaded it and uploaded it but it still doesn’t work for me. It’s 11 months old so it’s for an older version, I’m using 2.0.5. Thought it would have been fixed by now, but I guess not.

According to the codex <?php next_post_link('%link &raquo;', '%title', '17') ?> and <?php previous_post_link('&laquo; %link', '%title', '17') ?>should exclude posts from category 17 from the next and previous links on single view. When I do use it however, it doesn’t work that way. It skips posts, seemingly at random.
