NextGen not working with my custom theme – it used to!

I have NextGen on a couple of sites. All my sites have custom themes. It works on some of the sites, but recently stopped working on two. Sites are all updated to WP 3.8.1 and plugins are all updated.
In this case, I switched to TwentyFourteen and the gallery lightbox worked. When I switched back to my custom theme, it stopped. So, if the lightbox worked in TwentyFourteen, that would seem to rule out a plugin conflict, wouldn’t it?
The galleries show up on pages looking fine, but when you click a thumbnail they simply open the enlarged image on a plain page instead of in a lightbox. Nothing in the theme has changed and the lightbox used to work. I checked the NextGen settings against the settings I have in a site where the lightbox is still working and they are the same.
Can anyone advise what I should look for in the theme that might be causing the problem?
