NextGen gallery – disable image compression

Is there a way to disable image compression in NextGen gallery? I like to edit and compress all my images first, and then upload them to the gallery.

I like to have them the way I want, but also to edit all the metadata. I suspect NextGen strips all the info from files, such as tags and copyright.
