nextgen gallery compatability

I setup the custom pst types, fields and templates.
Then when I try to create an item in the post type I appear to have a conflict with NextGen Gallery. NextGen appears to want the post type to support custom fields.
This is the error.
TypeError: Cannot read property ‘ngg_post_thumbnail’ of undefined
These are pages that seems to describe a fix but I do not understand them. Is there a way to implement a fix or do I need to switch the gallery plugin I am using?
