Just in case anyone missed it, I’m still looking for a solution to this issue. Thanks.

    Hi,

Not sure whether you sorted this or not, but I found if I was using custom permalinks and in my home page template configuring it to display only a certain number of posts (e.g. using query_posts to return two posts at a time), the previous/next links would take me to a 404 page as you encountered.

This post recommended to check your WordPress Admin panel and ensure in the Settings – Reading section, you set “Blog posts show at most” to the same number of posts you want to display (2 in my case).

The downside of this is that whenever posts are displayed, they’ll display only that many on a page at a time. So if you need variation between the home page and the archives, you’ll need to create alternative template files.

This seems to be a fairly common issue and happens only if you have custom permalinks. I’m not sure whether it’s a bug or a feature.

    All the best.
    Vaughan
