next_post_link() sends to index

  • New to theme development I am trying to understand WordPress better but Im stuck trying to figure out why when I loop through a custom wp_query in home.php when I use next_post_link() it sends to index.php with a the url of website/page/2/ but why is that? How can I properly execute this? I do have the setting of display front page posts in reading set.
