News Subscription With a twist

Hi Guys , after scouring the web I wasn’t able to find any mentioning or plugin that can do what I need yet it seems a very straight forward concept.

I need a website where users can subscribe to categories (interests) with simple click of a button. these categories the user is subscribed to will then display feeds on a page specific for the user … A my account page or something this will only display the users interests (being the subscribed categories)

I’m guessing this will require some custom PHP but it doesn’t seem like a particularly difficult task to achieve with the right guidance.

Any Assistance / advice would be really helpful here on where I would start with this task.
