Newlines do nothing in frontend email

It would appear that newlines (entered by support staff) still (?) do not appear to users in the frontend, or in emails sent by the plugin.
Perhaps the Pro version with HTML email support would resolve this, but I am using wpMandrill with its automatic newline conversion turned on – it would appear that they’re being stripped out altogether.
Short of modifying the plugin itself, is there any way to fix this, or is there a fix on the way? Threads from 10 months ago indicate this was a problem that was supposed to be fixed in 2.0.
