Hi, I might be trying to do the impossible, but here goes, if there’s a better way by all means start me in a new direction.

I’ve been able to keep 4 major topics in the pages box as 4 separate pages with their own page names. They are Home, About, Main Library and no2 library. I want to list in each library perhaps 50 pages under their own names in the main library, and likewise the no2 library.
I want them to be inside the ‘main library box’ so that the front PAGE segment of the blog doesn’t have a ridiculously long index down one side.

How can I set this up most effectively?
If I was building a website I would create a page called main library and the long list/index would be inside. Each name would then be a live link that took the reader to 10 pages on the subject.

I looked at doing this in categories but it quickly became a visual mess. Don’t get me wrong, these 4 categories would be good in the categories box but…every new category entry appears on the blog front page and pushes my front page welcome down to the bottom and out of sight.

Sadly I don’t friends doing blogs whose shoulder I can look over to get the feel for how these work.

you’re using pages wrong. You should be doing that with categories. If you want something static on the front page, you can set a static home page through your admin. Or you can use a ‘welcome’ or ‘sticky’ post plugin to have your welcome message at the top of your homepage, then posts listed under that. You can set how many posts show on the home page in your admin also.

every new category entry appears on the blog front page

There are plugins that will keep those particular categories (the library categories) off the front page.

And if you want to keep your welcome message on the front page, assign it an exclusive category like “Welcome” and create a second WP Loop, but put it at the top, before the current WP Loop. Call the category ID of your “Welcome” category (mine happens to be ID 43). showposts tells WP to just put the latest 1 post on the front page so you can change your welcome message around to account for seasons, etc. WP will always just call the latest post from that category. And of course, you can style it and arrange the elements (meta, feedback, date, etc.) however you want. This example is from one of my sites:
