Newbie: WP on local machine

Hello- I looked around a bit and couldn’t find a suitable solution: I would like to run WP on my local machine, (XP with Apache), and I desperately need a fairly simple(?) step-by-step tutorial for starting this process. Also, can a “package” such as WAMP be used for running WP locally? Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
