newbie – where to install WordPress?

Where to install wordpress? Based on your comment, “I’d also like all of the site to share a look and feel (theme) and figure that I’ll use WordPress for those static pages as well” I’d assume you’re planning on using wordpress as some type of cms (content management solution)

If that is correct, I’d just install wordpress in the root of your site. You can style it to your hearts content and there are some cool plugins to allow you to use a static html homepage.

If you want the whole site to look the same and plan to use Pages to manage your “static” information, then I’d suggest installing at the root. A lot of sites out there do use WordPress to maintain (or at least front) the entire site’s environment.

But I agree that getting things right on the first try is a good thing, so you definitely should take time to think through the layout and hierarchy of your site before setting things up.
