• Real Noob question.
How can i tell if i have trackbacks running on my site?
    https://www.alibutt.com

In fact, i am not entirely sure if i know what they are ??

My guess is that if someone puts a link to one of your posts on their site, WP tracks it and puts the link on yours?

Please clear up this confusion ??
    Thanks

  • Basically if someone is running wordpress, or a program similar, their software will ping your post if they link to it. This then puts the trackback in your post as a comment. There are some plugins that seperate trackbacks from comments, and they can be found at the codex I believe.

There are no “index” trackbacks which show if your main page is being linked to, if that is what you are asking.

Don’t confuse “pings” and trackbacks, they are separate and different animals.

A pingback is created (if turned on) if you place a link to an outside source that supports pingbacks. WP and Expressioneengine are two blogging programs that support it. Again if turned on this is automatic. The downside is it may slow your posting drmaticly. Best bet is to leave it off and only allow it on entries you desire it not on every post.

Trackbacks are used to place a link on someone else’s blog. It is a way to let that other blogger know you have a related article on your blog.

A note on blogging courtesy. When you trackback someone also place a link in your post to the permalink of their entry in the text of your post.

On another note: In looking at your site you have removed the trackback URL from each entry. Unless you display the URL or a link to it you will never receive any trackbacks.

    Thank you both.

    Marc,
This is it !, i used someone else’s theme and i could not see the trackback bit.

Can you/anyone tell me how i can enable the trackback URL for each entry ?

Check in the Classic theme (for example) the comments.php… around line 30 you’ll see how it’s done.

You beat me to the answer moshu ??

BTW Ali-butt, I noted you had modified someone elses theme. Out of courtesy you may want to re-enter the name of the originator in your footer.php.

Give credit where it is due.

can you see if the trackback is OK?

    Cheers

I just sent a TB from a random post. It appears to be working OK.

Unfortunately, I am having the same problem, but it doesn’t work with the classic or default theme.

My blog is at blog.hirebrianburridge.com. I’ve attempted to trackback to it from another sample log I installed, and it never shows up.

I’ve been trying to figure this out for so long now that frustration has finally taken over. All I wanted to do was blog. ??

    Brian

I just attempted to send a TB from my blog (a random post) and it failed to display on your end.

In looking at your source code I discovered your blog is being displayed useing frames. This may have something to do with the problem.

Did you do the install or your host? If it was your host please inform them they are about a decade behind current technology.

The blog is inside a frame. I paid for the domain name, but didn’t want to pay for an additional account, when you go to hirebrianburridge.com it displays a frame that holds the site where the blog is.

Ironically, I was just having a discussion with them about this, because it routinely gives a No Document Found error as well. I set it up this way, only because I saw documentation on their site that indicated this was how to do it. But, he has now informed me that I can add it as a subdomain. So perhaps this will fix both of my problems. I’ll post back when I get that worked out.

Word Press itself was installed with the account. I just setup the domain name as a “framed” account. You think this could cause problems with Word Press?

    Brian

Ok, I’ve fixed the frame thing. The blog is now at blog.hirebrianburridge.com, and unfortunately Trackbacks still don’t seem to be working.

I’m using 1.5 of wordpress, from the default install, with the Connections theme.

    Its working now actually.

I see it puts them under comments. Also, didn’t realize that the word “trackback” had to go after the post url. I’ve seen on some blogs where it gives the trackback url, but I don’t see that on mine. Is there a way to add that?

The connections theme does give the TB URL.

Look at your comments page, in the right hand box:

    “# Do More :
    # You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.”

Hover on the word trackback and it will give you the URL.

And you are correct, I just ent a successful TB to your post.

Ok. Thanks for testing that. I suppose if I want the trackback url showed with the post on the front page, I just need to edit the template? Personally, I don’t think its very clear how you leave a comment, (just says No Comments at first), but I suppose I can alter all that myself.

To be honest it would take someone with a near zero experience with blogs and blogging to not understand “No Comments” link is used to enter a comment.

If you want to add the TB URL to the front page just copy what is in the comments page then add it to your index page next to the comments link.
