• Newbie Question alert!
I created and maintained a website for a friend for the last few years. It was a ‘traditional’ web site written with a WYSIWIG editor (Serif Webplus) in .html
Owing to lack of visitors he had somebody transfer the site to WordPress and it is now live in that format.
I have been asked if I can maintain the site for him and frankly, I have no knowledge of WP whatsoever.
In the html past I always had a copy of the site in various forms and after every change and I could ftp the latest version to the server as and when necessary.
Am I correct in thinking that the WP site has to be edited ‘live’ on the server or can I edit the site offline and keep a copy on my PC?

Thank you for your constructive advice.

  • Hi Mark,

You can do all that and more with a WordPress website. Yes, you can definitely maintain backups. You can also set up WordPress locally (on localhost) and then upload it to the server using FTP client.

You are also correct in thinking that you can edit the site “live” on the server but when you say “edit” I would consider the content of the website. WordPress has a great CMS.

If you want to change the look and feel of a page it is always a good practice to first do that on localhost and then upload it to production server.

Just my two cents. Hope that is helpful.
