Newbie questions

  • A few basic questions. I’m talking really, really basic questions…

    I’m not even started using Word Press. I’m considering it. I’ve searched the tutorial sections, but couldn’t find clarification on a few things to get me started…

    I have a few websites that I’ve done in Dreamweaver. I’m thinking of adding a blog to one or more of those sites. And I might launch a new site using Word Press.

    Either way, my sites are hosted by a third party (I wouldn’t have the first clue how to host my own site on my own server). I just do all the design and FTP it to their server(s).

    My hosting company also provides Word Press with my hosting account. Evidently, all I have to do to install it is to do so in the online Control Panel of my hosting account. Nothing to it. Or so they would have me believe.

    But then what?

    Do I need to install Word Press software on my local computer to run Word Press? Or does it run through some sort of online interface that I interact with through a web browser? I don’t get it.

    Do I create a blog in Word Press (like I would create a web page in Dreamweaver), and then copy the code from Word Press and paste it into a page in Dreamweaver? What?

    Or do you just design the whole darn page in Word Press?

    And if there is Word Press software to install on my local computer, will it run on Mac OS X Leopard? (Or is the only software I need one of my browsers — Safari or Firefox?)

    Sorry for these bonehead simple questions. But hey, y’gotta start somewhere. ??

    You are going to install it on your server so that the server will run it for you day and night. You will be able to write articles with a web browser. So you won’t use Dreamweaver. Yes, you can use Safari, Firefox, Camino, Opera… I wouldn’t use Firefox or Opera to write and edit articles when running Mac OS X.

    Okay, maybe I’m not quite explaining myself adequately. Just so I’m clear…

    I install it on the server. Which means I don’t have to download anything here, since my hosting provider makes Word Press available to me through the online Control Panel of my hosting account. Yet I read throughout this forum and on the www.remarpro.com website about how people “download Word Press.” Am I correct in assuming that’s for people who aren’t using a hosting provider that makes it available to them (as most do)?

    Then, you say I “write articles” using my web browser. Okay, dandy. But what about page layout and design? Do I do that in a browser, too?

    Sure, you can modify your layout in your presentation or design section. Just navigate to ‘theme’. Alternatively, you can modify your files offline and upload them to your server.

    Although, it sounds like you have no experience whatsoever, so this might be a bit tricky.

    And it might be easier if you just get a free theme. Then modify that to suit your tastes.

    Yes and no. Some people prefer to install WP for themselves instead of using automatic installation through Fantastico or whatever. But you are right about not having to download WP. If you prefer, you can use auto installation. I won’t use auto installation because I prefer to control and manage database name, username, password for myself. And there is no guarantee that Fantastico and other auto packages are constantly updated. That also depends web hosting companies.

    In order to customize a theme (layout and design), you do it with an HTML editor, text editor, CSS editor… You won’t do it with a web browser. I make my own themes, but it takes too much trouble. So you may want to download free themes here or other places.
