• OK. I promise I tried the documentation and the searching the forum and I can’t seem to find the answer to this question…
I see that by default there is an area where people can register themselves as users. And I also see that you can disable this.
Why would you want to allow “just anyone” to be able become a user? Anyone can post a comment withour becoming a user right?
    Thanks!

  • being registered is not the same as being able to post, there is a hierarchy of users w different rights.

Yes you can allow anonymous posting on your site. You can also easily disallow this, and require people to be logged in to post stories or comments.
In most cases, I don’t think it’s a big enough deal, you can just set the commenting to require email addresses or something and people can put their name and email and post comments.

And normaly, just because some one registers, doesn’t give them permission to post…. the admin has to go in and give them at least level 1 status in order to post. Also, I think 90% of WP users remove that little bit after getting their site up.

    OK. That makes sense.
I guess that the registration feature might be good if:
    a. you want to keep track of readers so you can send out mass emails
    b. you want WordPress to act like a forum and have it so that anyone who signs up gets permissions to post
… or other things that hinge upon people having to sign up.
I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t shortchanging any good features by disallowing people to register.
