Newbie needs help

Hello all, I have been trying to upload some plugins to my blog and after every attempt the new plugins don’t appear in my dash/plugin page. I am using filezilla I unzip then drop into the wp-content / plugin folder then upload – nothing. I managed to upload a new theme, but no luck with h the plugins. What could be wrong?
