• Hello, I have looked for answers to these 2 questions but have not found them on any threads or FAQ’s.

From my research, I am strongly leaning toward using WordPress becuase of what I’ve read about its ease of use. But I have a couple of concerns.

I am considering using WordPress to create a website and blog. I have downloaded but not yet installed the software. Two Questions:

    1) From reading the WordPress website installation guidelines, it appears that I need to already have a Host before I install everything. What if I want to create a website on my local hard drive first; to see if I like the software. I don’t want to have to get a Host and THEN discover that I don’t like using WordPress. So, am I mistaken? Can I install the software, create a website, and THEN upload to a Host?

    2) In the near future (when I get a marketing job!) I am planning on leaving the world of PC’s and buying a Mac. If I start using WordPress on my current Dell, and later on I want to switch to a Mac, will I experience any difficulties? Will old files be able to be read by the new Mac if I copy them over? If not, (and if at that point I am already using a Host), will the Mac simply need to download and edit files stored on the Host website?

    Please advise this “Newbie”.

    Thanks!

  • 1) Install WordPress locally.
Then you will have all files, but also the database on your PC! You can then install WP on your host and import the database export that you made of your local install.

    2) When WP is installed at a host it doesn’t matter, but I must say I have never worked (with WP) on a Mac.

Thank you so much for asking this question. I wanted to know if I could install on a local computer to test things before I changed my theme. I’m already using WordPress on my website but I don’t want to mess around with the theme until I know I won’t screw up the website. I want to create a new theme and then see how easy it is to switch to the new theme. I also want to be able to switch back to the old theme once in a while. Is that possible without losing any of the content?

Of course! Content is separate from themes. ??
