• I am new to wp but I have a wp install that is running and I want to change the db that it is using right now. If I change the setting in the wp-config file with change the db that wp is using?

  • Yes it will change the DB, but may have unexpected results. Many of the current settings, like all user info, the current theme and its options, active plugins and their options, all content, etc, are stored in the DB. You may not even be able to log in if your user info is different.

    Thank vtzyzzy. The issue was the previous developer used a one click install to install WordPress on 1&1 and we did not have access to the db. So I had 1&1 give me a dump of the database so that I could recreate the same database on myside. I just need to know where to switch the db connection. Nothing was messed up and no users were lost since it was a replica of the existing db. Thanks again for the help.

    If you have the wp-config.php from the original site, it contains all the things you need to connect to the database.

    If you have not destroyed the site, you should be able to get the wp-config.php file by ftp, or the hosting service can get you a copy.

    If you have destroyed the site, see if the hosting service has a backup that can be restored.
