• With the latest WordPress SEO by Yoast update, you can’t edit the SEO Title for an article. Mr. Yoast, please return to the old way of populating that field.

With this update, the field is pre-populated with a greyed-out post title. When you put the cursor in there to edit it, you cannot select any of the text. So, you have to type or cut & paste manually. The other way was much better.

I find I often have to edit that field. Sometimes the title is too long, or, as it includes the site title, sometimes that has to be removed, if it’s too long. I also like to edit it for other reasons.

Maybe you could give the option to use it the old way in the plugin’s preferences?

Meanwhile, is there a way to change this that anyone is aware of?

    Otherwise, great plugin!

  • I am having the same issue but it is only on some sites. All sites are using our custom themes so I am guessing it is a plugin conflict. It is also a problem with the Yoast video SEO plugin.

Same problem here…Can′t edit pages titles manually any more…

I was wondering if it was only me that liked the “old way” better, now I see I am not alone. I did like that I could put the default title in and then edit it. To add the site tile if desired is now a cut and paste job. I loved it when it was a delete job, so much quicker for me.

SEO Title section greyed out, can’t change text on pages

I too am frustrated with this new behavior. It seems counterintuitive to disable the ability to directly edit the SEO Title. My articles’ SEO Titles are generated by <title> – <post type> – <site name> and so it’s time consuming to reconstruct this title should it be too long by default. Having the option to select the old behavior would be very helpful.

Also looking for a way to get the old behavior back in place, the option to edit the SEO title directy, any hints

It’s at the top of the tread.
I’m sure Joost will come with an update soon, because this does not make sense…

I would also like to see this reverted back to previous set up. Thanks.

    Joost,
New update today (3/7/2013) did not correct and still greyed out. Please offer suggestions.
    Peace,
    michael

    I am getting :

“The plugin generated 296 characters of unexpected output during activation. If you notice “headers already sent” messages, problems with syndication feeds or other issues, try deactivating or removing this plugin.” on plugin activation.

    Hi

    I got the same error – deactivated , re-installed … same error

The plugin generated 304 characters of unexpected output during activation. If you notice “headers already sent” messages, problems with syndication feeds or other issues, try deactivating or removing this plugin.

I’m also having the same problem. I thought it was an issue that suddenly appeared after updating the plugin to the recent version (version 1.4.2).

Reverting to the old version of the plugin didn’t help. I still couldn’t edit the SEO title.

However unlike the last two comments above me, I don’t get the error message (The plugin generated nnn characters of unexpected output during activation. If you notice “headers already sent” messages, problems with syndication feeds or other issues, try deactivating or removing this plugin.).

It’s simply that I couldn’t edit the SEO title. It’s greyed out. That’s all.

UPDATE: I’ve reverted to version 1.3.4.4 and the SEO title can be edited once again.

Same issue on a site I’m working on – definitely seems like a javascript issue/error, definitely not a plugin conflict, could be a theme conflict (I didn’t test that to rule it out completely).

    Reverting to 1.3.4.4 fixed it.
