• Woo, first post. Anyway, I’ve begun work on a new layout for WordPress’ back end (wp-admin) that, at least in my personal opinion, is much nicer to use than the current design. Here’s a screenshot of what it looks like and here’s a preliminary jab at the post page. (Just a note: this is all CSS so far, but there are some PHP code changes I’d like to make to edit-form.php.)

Even if, say, the main WP developer (whoever you are…*waves*) doesn’t decide to accept this exact style sheet (obviously it’s too colorful and serif-less :-D), there is one key change that I think the WordPress GUI would benefit from. WordPress desperately needs a permanent sidebar. It may seem clich??, but sidebars truly reduce clutter; for example, placing all “advanced editing” options on post.php’s sidebar would remove the need for an advanced editing mode.

One other little thing I’d like to see is a large title input box on the post/edit page. It’s always seemed that one of the most important attributes of a post has received far too little emphasis.

  • Hmm. Who reads instructions anyhoo? ??

Great work Kohlmannj! I’ve been making minor modifications to the admin area (removing and simplifying rather than styling) but your work seems significantly more interesting than what I’ve been doing.

    Well done!

funny… i somehow prefer the default wordpress admin theme. there is more serif, but it looks more consistent.

is it normal that buttons change size when pressed and that font sizes are inconsistent?

Heads up, people! After biding my time, I’ve put some more time into making this design look good. I also decided to name it “Spotpress” because of its obvious resemblance to the Spotlight search results window in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. I also took a quick stab at placing a few of the parts of the post writing page on the sidebar, but right now it’s extremely sketchy since it’s relying on absolute position and a constant text size. I’ll probably have to learn JavaScript or something to really get this working, but until then, you’ll at least be able to see where I intend to go with the sidebar.

Well, that’s all for now… Get the latest version of Spotpress, the WP admin redesign plugin, and please leave some feedback on it in this thread.

    I think it’s DEAD SEXY

    /me dances like Fat Bastard

I especially like the bolding of unvisited Planet links. Rawr.

My webhost won’t allow me to upload the store file. If I change the file type to txt, it won’t allow me to change it back once its uploaded. Can you offer a suggestion that will allow me to upload the store file so I can use this plugin? Thanks.

You don’t need to upload the __MACOSX folder or the ._.DS_Store files at all, and I really wish OSX wouldn’t do that ?? Even Windows doesn’t do that!

Wow, that looks great. It’s like wp just rocketed into the 21st century.

Oh yeah, now I’ve set up a permanent page for SpotPress. That’s all for now.

is it a design thing or a consideration thing for low res users which is why there’ s blank space to the right of everything? What would I edit to make it full width, it just seems a waste to waste to waste all that extra space

I’ve created a new section in the Themes list just for things like this.

thanks miklb it was late ?? i guessed it was for the sidebar since there was mention of it but all that space…:)

    good work kohlmannj

Much Better!!! I hope he keeps yours.

Open source doesn’t necessarily have to be ugly source.

One thing I’d really like is more space in the actual post section or an option to click a button and extend it for extended viewing space.
