• Woo, first post. Anyway, I’ve begun work on a new layout for WordPress’ back end (wp-admin) that, at least in my personal opinion, is much nicer to use than the current design. Here’s a screenshot of what it looks like and here’s a preliminary jab at the post page. (Just a note: this is all CSS so far, but there are some PHP code changes I’d like to make to edit-form.php.)

Even if, say, the main WP developer (whoever you are…*waves*) doesn’t decide to accept this exact style sheet (obviously it’s too colorful and serif-less :-D), there is one key change that I think the WordPress GUI would benefit from. WordPress desperately needs a permanent sidebar. It may seem clich??, but sidebars truly reduce clutter; for example, placing all “advanced editing” options on post.php’s sidebar would remove the need for an advanced editing mode.

One other little thing I’d like to see is a large title input box on the post/edit page. It’s always seemed that one of the most important attributes of a post has received far too little emphasis.

  • The new design looks great! Goes well with the Kubrick design!

Will be great if there are WISYWIG buttons for the poste page!

I like it. Hope you finish it.

Looks great. Would love to give it a try and dump the simple Admin screens now. ??

    Regards

I just want the Dashboard to refer to my particular system period. I don’t need all those silly boxes in the lower 2/3, and when I want “updates”, I come here from my permanent bookmark, not the Dashboard.

All the Dashboard needs to be is a control panel for the pertinent site…. which is the local “owner” site, NOT WordPress. Yes, WP is great…. the Dashboard stuff, however, is overkill….

I’m hoping shuttle will really make things different for the admin side, it’s fairly easy to pretty things up – but shuttle should make it better (I hope!)

Kohlmannj, I can see that you’re a little bit influenced by Tiger. ^_- It looks nice.

Looks nice! I think many WP users would want to give a try!!

Well, here’s what I have for now:
    https://homepage.mac.com/kohlmannj/.Public/wpadminredesign.zip

Unpack the ZIP, dump the contents into your plugins folder, and activate the plugin.

There are a couple issues so far:

    • “Updated” notification’s positioning is wonky
    • Problems with getting stuff on the sidebar
    • I’m not sure how I would be able to do some of these things without having to resort to absolute positioning, which is ucky since it doesn’t account for how high a content section can be, or modifying the PHP code in the admin pages, which is equally arbitrary in my opinion.
    • Also had a problem with the sidebar clearing the heading on the Write page (you’ll see some white space on the top). Any help with this would be appreciated.
    • Wasted Bandwidth; the plugin’s stylesheet *overlays* the WP admin stylesheet, so I can’t say that that’s extremely efficient, though hey, maybe it is.
    • Browser compatibility?
    • It works great in Safari and Firefox (except for PNG color mismatching, which I’ll fix by using GIFs), of course.
    • I haven’t even seen what murderous rendering errors emerge in IE 6. Help would be appreciated in this department as well if it actually means something to someone (read: nobody sane would use IE! :-P).

Nevertheless, enjoy and gimmie some feedback 8-).

Wow! That looks great! One of the main criticisms of the WP admin is that it is not fixed-width. I’ve hacked together a style at my site but yours is prettier. ?? I’ll give it a try! ??

My theme based on a post by Scrivs: https://randywalker.net/archives/2005/02/28/wp-admin-theme-for-15-final/

    Thats really great!

I was thinking about restyling my admin panel, but didn’t feel like putting the time into something that only I would be seeing.

Tons of respect from me to you !

Whoops. Hehe, your plugin isn’t compatible with my theme. Hehehe… whoops… hmm…

Hmmm… the options page for WP-Contact-Form displays the menu twice…

Wow…looking good, but geez, does EVERYTHING on the interweb have to be Apple glass? :p

P.S. I like the way you’ve made this a plugin. Makes my hack look even kludgier! ??

    (@macmanx)

Randy, you need to put the options-contact-form.php file in /wp-admin/ not /wp-contact/. Don’t worry, it happens all the time.

P.S. That is a great WP Admin mod. I love the Apple flavor, very Tiger-ish.
