• First of all I have to say that I’m not very technically minded but I get by!

I am building a new site for my grandson’s football club, I only put content on it today, about midday UK but at 22:30 UK I was on the telephone to my daughter, asking her to check what I had done so far…. she then noticed some links that were underlined and in red and asked what they were….. I hadn’t put any links on the site yet and couldn’t see them on my PC in wordpress backend or by searching for the site outside wordpress.

She clicked on the links and said they brought up some games that were inapropriate for kids.

I changed my password straight away and made the page un-public (if that’s the correct term).

Does this mean that my PC has been hacked? and if so, is there anything I can do to remedy the situation?

    Any help would be appreciated.
I will not be able to check any replies to this post until about 09:00 tomorrow so please don’t think I’m not checking back here!

    Thanks in advance.
    Regards, Gary.

PS. What’s the best way to make the whole website so that the public can’t view it?

  • Most likely a browser addon or hack on her computer. Tell her to try another browser and/or scan her computer.

You can check your site here:

What do you see when you look at the site on your PC? If you don’t see those links, then it’s your daugthers PC that’s got some malware on it. The main culprit for links in content that aren’t seen by everyone is that there’s an ad extension or some other form of malware that’s been installed on that users browser. If that’s the case then the godo news is that it’s not your site, and you don’t have to worry about that now, however I would recommend looking at Hardening WordPress so that you can get more of an idea of hwo to keep the site safe in the future as well.

Thanks to both of you for your replies!
That’s probably the answer to the problem….. her PC is very slow and I keep telling her to get some protection, but to no avail!

    Thanks again.

If her PC has something telling her to buy protection software do not click on it or buy it!!!

That’s how hackers get into systems. They put a small program on that runs and tells you that you need to buy something to get rid of an “infection, then the program that you buy spreads the infection even more. Get her PC looked at by a technician somewhere so that you can get rid of the virus’s completely.
