New user registration notifications

WordPress is not sending emails with username/password to new users registered by admin? I am running it on an Ubuntu system with PHP and MySQL 5, and sendmail installed, and the admin receives emails whenever a new user is added, but the user does not. The DagonDesign import users plugin does send emails, and password reminders work, but they both take an awfully long time to reload the page when the link is clicked.
